For more than one hundred years, the Dom-Ino system of concrete construction has shaped the minds and hands of modernism architects. While the cutting-edge additive manufacturing technology calls for new design methods. 3D concrete printing has a great freedom in 2D plane, but it is difficult to make cantilevers or horizontal parts without customized supports. There is a variety of construction methods, such as in-situ printing, prefabrication, mould printing, 90-degree flipping after printing, which enable us to create bespoken flowing space. We optimize the geometric shape and create new construction systems. Visual appeal, high-performance structure, efficient printing process can be unified. The traditional linear process of “architectural design – structural design – construction” is no longer valid. The dichotomy between simple and complex, structure and decoration, solid and space should be reconsidered. 3D printing architecture powered with computational design method could integrate design, optimization, and construction.
