Computational Design & Digital Fabrication

The 2015 workshop of Computational Design and Digital Fabrication (CDDF 2015) at the School of Architecture is directed by Hao Hua and Prof. Li Biao. The workshop consists of 12 students of fourth grade. They gain a new architectural perspective by exploring the potential of machine-induced design and materialization processes. The course is very intensive since the students learn computer programming, computational geometry, CNC machines, and material properties almost from scratch. The challenge is to encode their design ideas via computational logics, and eventually to implement them with materials and machines.

The digital fabrication workshop has been productive since 2007. We have produced a wide range of pavilions, furniture, facade and celling. It’s a significant step from drawing to building.  Along these digital fabricated works, we have gradually established a design methodology focusing on computational logics and fabrication process.
